There's nothing quite like a cold, creamy watermelon smoothie to kick off a hot summer morning. This strawberry watermelon smoothie blends juicy watermelon and ripe strawberries with banana, orange juice, Greek yogurt, and a spoonful of chia seeds, turning three humble fruits into a thick, healthy, nutrient-packed drink that tastes more like dessert than breakfast.
You can absolutely sip this healthy watermelon smoothie any day of the week for breakfast, but it earns its keep as an afternoon cooler, too - the kind of drink you want in hand the moment the summer temperature climbs. And because it's basically a version of a watermelon banana smoothie with strawberries thrown in for good measure, it's naturally sweet enough that you won't need to add any sugar.

Here in Canada, watermelon and strawberries are very much seasonal fruits, and it's not uncommon to see a 12-dollar watermelon the size of a cantaloupe in the middle of winter - so that might not be the best time for a watermelon smoothie! But once summer hits, watermelons get cheap, and strawberries come into season and start popping up in my backyard. That's exactly when I load up the fridge and blend this recipe on repeat.

Can You Use Frozen Watermelon For Smoothies?
This is a question that I've heard a surprising number of people ask, and the answer is yes!
Frozen watermelon is actually a great trick for making this smoothie extra creamy and cold without watering it down with ice. Just swap in frozen watermelon in place of fresh, and you'll get a thicker, milkshake-like consistency straight out of the blender.
Frozen strawberries can also be used, though if you have fresh ones growing in your backyard garden or growing in pots, obviously use those first!
Plus, if you're a watermelon smoothie fan, freezing extra melon when it's cheap and in season is one of the best things you can do for your freezer stash.
How To Freeze Watermelon for Smoothies
I have never seen frozen watermelon for sale...why? That means you need to freeze your own. It's easy, though!
- Cut the melon slices: Quarter the watermelon, then run your knife through the flesh to cut it into slices.
- Cut the slices into cubes: Run your knife perpendicular to the previous cuts to create cubes.
- Remove the flesh: Run the knife along the peel to remove the cubed sections of watermelon flesh. Removing any large seeds.
- Spread the cubes in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze. This stops the pieces from clumping into one giant block.

The watermelon cubes take about 20 minutes to freeze solid enough for use in smoothies.

For longer-term storage:
- Transfer to a freezer bag or airtight container once frozen, pressing out as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn and a mushy texture.
Yes - that means you can absolutely enjoy a strawberry watermelon smoothie in the fall or even in the dead of winter, using fruit you froze back in July!

How to Make a Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie
This creamy strawberry watermelon smoothie will quickly give you a boost of energy and easily fill your daily requirement of fruits. The yogurt, chia, and milk provide protein and dairy, and the orange provides a healthy dose of vitamin C. A great breakfast smoothie, especially on a hot summer's day.
You'll need:
- 1 cup frozen diced watermelon
- 5-6 ripe strawberries
- ¼ cup fresh orange juice
- Half a banana, chopped
- 1 large spoonful of Greek yogurt
- ½ cup milk or kefir (almond milk may also be used)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
If you don't have a freezer or frozen watermelon, don't worry, and use fresh watermelon. The smoothie just won't be as 'icy' and thick.
Simply add all the ingredients to a blender and blitz them up! I use a Ninja Bullet blender for my smoothies because I find the large cup to be the perfect size to create one really big smoothie or two normal-sized drinks. Perfect if you are whipping up a smoothie for breakfast or as an afternoon snack.
The Ninja Bullet is also much more affordable than, say, a Vitamix, and is easily packed up if going on vacation or on a road trip.

Adjust the Texture of your Watermelon Smoothie:
The amounts above are how our family likes the strawberry watermelon smoothie, but here are a few easy tricks on how to adjust the consistency to your own preference:
- For a chunkier smoothie, add some more watermelon to the mix.
- To increase its smooth creaminess, add in another half banana or more yogurt.
- To thin it out, add more orange juice or milk.

Watermelon Banana Smoothie Variation
If you want to shift the flavor balance and lean more into the banana side of things, this recipe doubles beautifully as a watermelon banana smoothie. Simply:
- Use a full banana instead of a half - this thickens the smoothie further and adds natural sweetness, so you can cut back on (or skip) the orange juice.
- Swap Greek yogurt for a plant-based yogurt or milk if you want a dairy-free watermelon banana smoothie.
- Add a spoonful of peanut or almond butter for a more filling, protein-packed version that works well as a meal replacement rather than a light snack.
This variation is a great option if you've got an overripe banana that needs using up, and it turns the same base recipe into something that tastes noticeably different - creamier, sweeter, and a little more indulgent - while still keeping that fresh watermelon flavor front and center.
Can You Add Other Fruits to a Watermelon Smoothie?
The great thing about smoothies is that you can experiment with a variety of fruits (and even vegetables) to create endless variations. That said, a few fruits and veggies pair quite well with the sweet melon.
- Lemons and limes are a great match and provide a nice balance of flavor to the sweet melon.
- Raspberries, either fresh or frozen, are another great way to add tartness to a smoothie.
- Try adding mint to your watermelon smoothie for a refreshing summer drink!
- Blueberries add a punch of flavor and also boast antioxidants.
- Kiwi is another good option as it adds sweetness, as well as some fiber, which can help bulk up the smoothie and make it thicker.

Got me thinking about freezing watermelon. How long do you think it will last for? Summer smoothies in Fall?
Markus Mueller
It should yes! As long as it's frozen and stored in a freezer bag it shouldn't freezer burn or go bad!
Charlotte
I love watermelon - especially during the warm summer months - so I can't believe I've never made a smoothie with it! Time to change that!
Lisa
Love the blend of different fruits in this smoothie! Will definitely want to try it this summer!
